  1. Hi, I have just purchased a 196k205 singer. I make horse rugs from ultra shade cloth and do repairs on canvas and ripstop rugs as well.
As this machine is completely different from the one I’m using now and who I got the 196k205 from haven’t used it many years, they aren’t sure what size needle or cotton.

Wondering if anyone could help me out with an appropriate needle size, uv thread and where in Australia I can get parts from eg needle plate etc.

    TIA Kylee 🙂
P.s. thanks to Wazza for telling me about this site

    • Hey Kylee,

Off the top of my head it uses a DBx1 needle, I will double check when I get to where the machine is stored and confirm either way.
I’m also fairly sure that it can take up to about a 110-120 size needle as is, but to go any heavier, you need to replace the chaining plate and feed dogs to allow clearance for the larger needles.

I’ve just had a quick browse of http://www.ebay.com.au and it would appear that there is a resonable selection of chaining plates, feed dogs, needles, etc. Just use the keywords “singer 196k”. If you prefer a brick and mortar store, then I’d hit up your local upholstery shops and ask them where they buy their consumables from.

      Hopefully this helps you out.

      Colin
